DIY Seashell Crayons

How to Melt Old Crayons into Fun Party Favors

These DIY crayons made the perfect party favor

If you’re a mom like me, you probably have a drawer full of broken crayons just waiting to be tossed. But instead of throwing them away, why not turn them into something magical? 🐚✨ This past week my youngest daughter celebrated her 3rd birthday and I knew I wanted to do something special for her class. These DIY seashell crayons are the perfect upcycled craft—eco-friendly, colorful, and kid-approved. They make amazing birthday party favors, classroom gifts, or rainy-day activities.

The best part? You can melt crayons two different ways: using the oven or the microwave. I’ll walk you through both so you can choose whichever method works best for you, I did the microwave option given the type of mold I had.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Old/broken crayons (paper peeled off)

  • Silicone seashell mold (or any fun mold you like)

  • Baking sheet (for oven method)

  • Microwave-safe cup or bowl (for microwave method)

  • Oven or microwave

How to Make Seashell Crayons

Step 1: Prep Your Crayons

  1. Gather your broken crayons.

  2. Peel off any paper wrappers.

*pro tip: ( soak in luke-warm water to make peeling the paper a whole lot easier )

  3. Break the crayons into smaller pieces so they fit easily into the mold.

Step 2: Oven Method

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F (120°C).

  2. Place crayon pieces into each section of your silicone mold.

  3. Set the mold on a baking sheet for stability.

  4. Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the crayons are fully melted.

  5. Carefully remove from the oven and let cool completely before popping them out.

Step 3: Microwave Method

  1. Place crayon pieces into a microwave-safe cup or bowl (disposable cups work great).

  2. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring each time until melted. ( I heated mine for roughly 7 minutes )

  3. Carefully pour the melted wax into the silicone mold.

  4. Let cool completely before removing.

Step 4: Cool & Enjoy

  • Once cooled, pop the crayons out of the mold.

*pro tip: resoak the mold ( with melted wax ) into a small tray. Trust me it makes the crayons pop out easier.

  • Package them in small bags or boxes for birthday party favors, classroom gifts, or stocking stuffers.

Tips for Success

  • Mix colors for a rainbow effect + add whitesss

  • Use color families (blues, greens, pinks) for a pretty ombré look.

  • Add a ribbon and tag for easy gift-ready favors.

I absolutely loved making these for my daughter’s class, it was super easy and took me no time at all to make. I highly encourage doing this craft if you have those broken crayons lying around the house. It is…

  • ♻️ Eco-friendly way to reuse broken crayons.

  • 🎉 Perfect for birthday parties & classroom treats.

  • 🌸 Simple enough for kids to help with.

  • 💡 Budget-friendly & creative.
