How to KEEP & MAINTAIN

“HEALTHY HAIR”

Over this past year, I’ve been extremely conscious of my overall hair heath. Between postpartum hair loss & endless pulling from “protective” styles, FEBRUARY 2025 my hair officially said enough is enough. It was thin, dry and overall unhealthy. I decided to put down the straightener and stay committed to getting my hair healthy again. I had given myself six weeks thinking by summertime I should be “straight” (no pun intended) but I quickly realized after six months that healthy hair is an everyday practice like anything else.

Healthy, shiny hair isn’t just about genetics—it’s the result of consistent care, balanced habits, and choosing the right products for your hair type. Whether your goal is to grow longer strands, maintain strength, or simply bring life back to dull hair, taking a mindful approach to hair care makes all the difference.

Nourish Your Hair from the Inside Out

For starters, great hair starts with what you put in your body. No it’s not rocket science; you eat healthier your body starts to take notice all around —including your hair. A balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals fuels hair growth and strength.

Foods I tried to incorporate…

  • Protein (chicken, fish, beans, eggs) for strong strands ( all in all more protein )

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon/trout, flaxseeds, chia seeds) for shine and hydration

  • Iron & zinc (leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds) for reduced shedding

  • Biotin & vitamin E for overall hair health ( green tea rinses )

Keep a Consistent Wash Routine

Washing too often can strip your hair of natural oils, while washing too little can lead to buildup and scalp irritation. The sweet spot depends on your hair type:

  • Curly/coily hair: 1–2 times per week is what’s “recommended” ( I do washday every other week )

  • Wavy/straight hair: 2–3 times per week

  • Fine/oily hair: Every other day if needed

    • pro tip : if you have curly or coily hair like me keep a spray bottle with aloe or green tea water to spray in-between washdays ( water/hydration is your bestie )

Lastly… Care for Your Scalp

I cannot stress this one ENOUGH!!!! You have to take care of your scalp, after all that’s where your hair grows from. Duh?

A healthy scalp = healthy hair. Massage your scalp a few minutes a day to boost blood flow, loosen buildup, and encourage growth. You can even use lightweight oils like jojoba or argan for extra nourishment.

  • pro tip add an essential oil like peppermint to help with itchy scalp for over all growth and health of your hair.

Maintaining healthy hair is about balance—nourishing your body, using the right products ( for YOU ), and building consistent care into your routine. When you give your hair the love it deserves, you’ll notice it grows stronger, shinier, and healthier over time.

Remember: small, daily habits add up. No your hair isn’t going to grow 10 inches overnight and it may take a little while before split ends begin to mend but start with one or two of these tips, and you’ll see a difference. A little goes a long way.
