Teaching Your Kids About Skincare: A Mom’s Guide to Early Beauty Habits

One day they’re covered in finger paint, the next they’re asking for your cleanser. Whether your little one is mimicking your self-care routine or your tween is suddenly skincare-curious thanks to TikTok, now is the perfect time to lay the foundation for healthy skin habits. Teaching kids about skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be a great way to bond while building their confidence and self-awareness. Plus, starting young helps prevent bad habits later—like sleeping in makeup or overwashing sensitive skin.

Lets start with the Basics (Ages 4–9)

At this stage, it’s all about gentle hygiene and making skincare feel like part of daily life—just like brushing teeth. ( my middle two are 5 & 7 ) they love copying my skincare routine and feeling like a “big kid” when it they do their morning or nighttime regimen.

What to Focus On:

  • Gentle cleansing: A mild, fragrance-free foaming cleanser or micellar water.

  • Moisturizing: A simple lotion or cream made for sensitive skin.

  • Sun protection: A lightweight SPF 30+ daily, especially for outdoor play.

Mom Hack:

Turn skincare into a game! Let them “clean your face” while you help them with theirs. Use a mirror, play music, and make it part of their morning or bedtime routine.

✨ Pro Tip: Look for kid-friendly brands like CeraVe, Cetaphil, Pipette, or Tubby Todd.

Introducing a Real Routine (Ages 10–13 / Tween Years

Hormones are on the rise, and with that comes oily skin, clogged pores, and curiosity. My oldest son will be 12 this year and we just started introducing a routine that works well with his sports activities. This is a great time to introduce your child to their first real skincare routine.

What to Include:

  1. Cleanser: A gentle foaming or gel cleanser (salicylic acid if acne-prone).

  2. Moisturizer: Non-comedogenic, lightweight lotion.

  3. Sunscreen: Everyday, no exceptions!

  4. Optional: A gentle exfoliating pad (1–2x a week) or spot treatment if needed. ( we use a exfoliating cleanser once a week )

Recommended Products:

  • Clean & Clear Essentials Cleanser

  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

  • Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch (for pimples!)

Do a “Mini Spa Day” together once a month—sheet masks, lip balm, and journaling included. This opens the door to conversations about body changes, self-image, and confidence in a low-pressure way.

Talk About Why Skincare Matters (Not Just Looks)….

Teach them that skincare isn’t about being “perfect”—it’s about taking care of your body. Just like brushing your teeth, washing your face is a way of honoring yourself.

Remember many kids (especially girls) may feel pressure from social media. Keep the message positive and empowering. Focus on:

  • Building routines

  • Understanding skin’s needs

  • Feeling confident in their own skin, not just covering it up

What to Avoid at This Age

Not everything trending on TikTok is tween-safe. At this age, avoid:

  • Harsh exfoliants or scrubs

  • Retinoids or actives like AHAs/BHAs (unless recommended by a derm)

  • Fragrance-heavy or overly complicated routines

  • Using your adult products—those are often too strong!

If they’re struggling with breakouts, consider booking a pediatric dermatologist visit. It can help prevent scarring and boost their confidence.

Create a Routine Chart (And Let Them Lead)

Kids love structure—and stickers!! Create a simple checklist that includes:

  • AM: Cleanse, moisturize, SPF

  • PM: Cleanse, moisturize

  • Optional: Hydration reminder + sleep tracker

Let them decorate it, choose their favorite scent-free products, or even pick a mini basket to keep their things in.

*Teaching your kids about skincare isn’t just about avoiding acne. It’s about helping them feel in control of their bodies, develop healthy habits, and build confidence—inside and out. You don’t need a degree in dermatology or a bathroom full of products to guide them. Just start small, lead with love, and make it fun.
